Women in my life

We are fortunate to have three delightful Chinese women living with us – Shufang from Yunnan in South West China and May and Apria from Taiwan. May and Apria are studying at JCU and Shufang is a visiting scholar.

At breakfast one day last week we were discussing the government system in Australia. I was explaining how the Queen was head of state and how Governors and Governor General fitted into the picture.

As we put it all together – Shufang remarked that she was pleasantly surprised to learn that not only was our head of state a woman, so too were the Prime Minister and Governor General. Wait a minute I thought – so too are the Premier and the State Governor. And not only that said Shufang, the Vice Chancellor of JCU is a woman also.

She thought for a while and said that in some countries it would be unlikely for women to fill any of these positions.

Then she laughed and said “And you have four women living with you”. I added “And my daughter is my close friend”

“Ah!” she exclaimed “you are very fortunate to have so many women in your life”. I agree with her.
